How to pace the Berlin Marathon

Berlin is the fastest of the majors: about 40 metres of total climb, long straight roads, wide streets, and sweeping turns. It is built for even and negative-split pacing.

Because nothing on the course forces you to slow down, the discipline has to come from you. The temptation is to drift 5–10 seconds per km fast in the first 10 km when legs are fresh and the road is flat.

Settle onto goal pace by 5 km and hold it. If anything is left after 30 km, the final stretch down Unter den Linden and through the Brandenburg Gate is dead flat and rewards a strong close.

Set a goal finish time above and the calculator builds a split plan for this course, grade-adjusted from its elevation profile. New to pacing? Read the pacing strategy guide.

FAQ

Berlin Marathon pacing FAQ

Why is the Berlin Marathon so fast?
Berlin combines a nearly flat course, long straights with few sharp turns, wide roads, and cool late-September weather. More marathon world records have been set here than on any other course.
Should I run negative splits at Berlin?
Berlin is one of the best courses for a negative split because the profile is even throughout. Start a few seconds per km slower than goal pace and pick it up after halfway.
How do I calculate marathon splits?
Choose a marathon course or distance, enter your goal finish time, select kilometers or miles, and generate a split-by-split pacing plan.
Should marathon pace change on hills?
A hill-adjusted plan usually slows the target pace on climbs and allows faster splits on descents so the effort stays more even across the course.
What is an elevation-adjusted pace plan?
An elevation-adjusted pace plan uses the course profile to distribute effort by split instead of assuming the same pace for every kilometer or mile. The goal is to slow slightly on climbs, recover time on descents, and still hit your target finish time.
