How to pace the Hong Kong Marathon
Hong Kong is the hilliest big-city marathon in Asia. The first 25 km cross three major flyovers and bridges — the Stonecutters Bridge and the approaches to the Nam Wan and Eagle’s Nest tunnels — each a sustained climb followed by a fast descent.
Then near 35 km the course drops into the Western Harbour Tunnel and climbs steeply out the far side, exactly when the legs are least willing. This is the decisive section.
Pace the whole race by effort, not by the clock. Give time back on every climb, stay relaxed on the descents, and keep the first half conservative so you can survive the tunnel climb at 35 km. Even in winter the air is humid, which adds to the load.
Set a goal finish time above and the calculator builds a split plan for this course, grade-adjusted from its elevation profile. New to pacing? Read the pacing strategy guide.
