How to pace the Chicago Marathon
Chicago is as flat as a major marathon gets — about 30 metres of total climb across 42 km — which makes even splits a genuinely viable plan here.
The real pacing risk is the start. The first two miles wind through the tall buildings of the Loop where GPS drifts badly and the crowd is dense; run these by feel and expect your watch to lie.
With no hills to force a rhythm, discipline comes from the clock. Lock onto goal pace by 5 km, hold it through the neighbourhoods, and save any surge for the last 5 km on Michigan Avenue and the short rise to the finish on Roosevelt Road.
Set a goal finish time above and the calculator builds a split plan for this course, grade-adjusted from its elevation profile. New to pacing? Read the pacing strategy guide.
